The webcomic follows the adventures of nerdy and acerbic Eve Ning, who lives with her long-lost childhood friend (and perpetual happy stoner), Hanna, in Brooklyn. Initially published three times a week, and now posted in collected “episodes,” the stories and world of OCTOPUS PIE have developed over hundreds of strips. Now the first two years of the comic are collected in the beautiful Villard trade paperback OCTOPUS PIE: There Are No Stars In Brooklyn.

In the twilight zone between college and the adult world lies the sardonic, witty, maddening and
sometimes melancholy terrain that Gran’s addictive comic OCTOPUS PIE maps with devastating, drop-dead-funny accuracy. Crazed childhood rivals, art world hipsters, Eve’s meddlesome mom, and boyfriends past and present crowd their lives. These alternately hilarious and thoughtful vignettes of twenty-something life will ring true to any reader, and sharp situational humor and crazy characters give OCTOPUS PIE a unique charm that’s hard to resist.

A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, Gran is influenced by her experiences in Brooklyn, where she lived until she moved to Portland, Oregon (in a neighborhood that reminds her of her old home). She’s also made a name for herself within the webcomics community, organizing the first- ever webcomics convention of its kind, Webcomics Weekend in New England. The second annual convention takes place this November.

Join your favorite webcartoonists
- including LA locals and visitors from afar -
for a night of fun on Sunset Boulevard!

Featuring appearances by:

Jorge Cham (Piled Higher and Deeper)
Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie)
Dave Kellett (Sheldon)
David Malki!

Henry and Glenn Forever is the ridiculous idea born out of a night of too many beers shared by a group of artists who sometimes call themselves The Igloo Tornado. On that night Gin Stevens said "There should be a Tom of Finland book, but with Henry and Glenn..." and Tom Neely and Scot Nobles replied: "Yes! And we're going to do it!" This bold idea (or is it a bad idea?) became a small zine that grew into a notorious legend that has now become a nice little book published by Cantankerous Titles.
In order to keep the artists calm and in the room we will be serving our usual whiskey and beer extravaganza. The festivities start at 8pm and will go until Glenn or Henry decide that they have had enough of this nonsense...
It was in the legal system where Noto, a court artist,
feverishly developed his dramatic drawing style. Reporting for the
court was an honor not lost on Noto but after years of service he craved
more. He relished the thought of documenting an amazing voyage on
the open seas. So, with much debate, Noto packed his bag (not unlike a hobo)
and set off for adventure!

We rediscovered Phil back in 1982. Not long after he washed ashore with little
more then what he took off with (not unlike a hobo). He was found with blistered,
bloody and pastel caked hands. He had been blissfully creating masterful works
of art, on the sidewalk. We thought Noto's talent might be better admired framed
and hung on some solid walls.

Join Phil Noto for a drink starting at 8pm and be sure to ask about the tattoos
he got when he was traveling as a hobo.

Secret Headquarters will have
Phil Noto's art work on display from
December 12th, 2008 to January 11th, 2009

notoart.comSecret Headquartershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03684361060380930832noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19212972.post-44051860469126989482008-10-21T11:51:00.000-07:002008-10-21T11:57:47.667-07:00KEVIN SCALZO at SHQ Friday Oct 24th, 2008

Secret HeadquartersPresents:

Recent Paintings and Drawings
KEVIN SCALZO

Opening reception:
Friday October 24th
Join the artist for a drink starting at 8pm

Kevin Scalzo's latest group of work is focused on themes of alienation andestrangement and how that has been reflected in the anxiety of the current times.
